Introduction
Anthem Inc. is the largest for-profit managed health care company in the
BCBS Association and is largely located in Indiana with operations all
over the US.
On January 29, 2015, the organization reported a cyber attack leading to a subsequent data breach which affected a large number of its Medicare members directly and personal records of over 80 million customers were stolen (modernhealthcare.com).The stolen personal records includes sensitive customer information such as their residential addresses, birth-dates, Medical IDs, Social Security Numbers, email addresses, employment information and some income data belonging to both current and former customers and employees, including its own chief executive.(Alertsec)
The Anthem data
breach has been described as the largest cyber attack ever disclosed by any
healthcare company and double the number of payment cards affected by Target
data breach in 2013.
